They're all gone. We remember them like yesterday pieces of our stolen heritage. Things like NASA. Football. Parades and pies. Good things, comfortable things. We remember a time when we were alone in the universe, safe and oblivious.

But it's all gone now.

We called them the Telestines, and in the face of their ruthless invasion we were powerless. By 2040, all the world's governments and militaries had fallen, and the remnants of humanity exiled to the solar system. We looked down on our blue planet, so close to our birthplace, so close to our home. But the miles may as well have been light-years.

Our anger smoldered in the darkness of space. On Mars. On Ganymede. In the dank, crowded filth of the asteroids. We swore We will take our planet back.

And today it begins. Our fleet is ready. Our soldiers determined.

Earth will be ours again.

Mercury Bane Book One of the Earth Dawning Series (Audible Audio Edition) Nick Webb Greg Tremblay Audible Studios Books

Earth was quickly defeated by the aliens. The war didn't last long as it was a massacre. The alien’s technology was so advanced that mankind didn't have a chance. Most of humanity was slaughtered. The few remaining humans were either living in remote places on earth, spread around the solar system or captured by the aliens and turned into drone slaves. The drones were genetically modified and are emotionless workers.

Some of the remaining humans formed a rebellion and slowly gathered weapons and ships and trained for a revolution. They spread around the solar system to find places to live and plan their revenge. They wanted freedom! Others surrendered after a treaty was signed and submitted to the dominance of the Telestine aliens.

The rebels are almost ready but they have been discovered by the Telestine military. It is now, or never. Fight and win freedom or die and see the end of the human race. Either way, the rebels want to make the Telestines regret that they didn't kill all the humans. The rebels want the Earth back, it belongs to them…..

This was a good book. I enjoyed it and found it to be a good story. I'll look forward to the next book in the series. I rated this one 4 stars.

I like military Sci-Fi and this book was entertaining for me.

Mercury Bane Book One of the Earth Dawning Series (Audible Audio Edition) Nick Webb Greg Tremblay Audible Studios Books Reviews

This was the first time I read the work of Nick Webb and I found the storytelling spellbinding. It was really hard to put my down and walk away for any length of time until I reached the chilling conclusion of this first book of a brand new series (you might say I put my life on hold till I could find out what happened with each segment of the story). I was sad to see that I had jumped into the Earth Dawning series before book two is available so I immediately turned to the Legacy Fleet The Complete Trilogy.

Mercury's Bane is in the finest tradition of Science Fiction / Space Opera -- Nick Webb establishes a solar system of intricate characters that are interesting, 3 dimensional, and that compel the reader to care about what happens to them next. We are saddened by the losses and defeats, we are made hopeful by the successes and surprising developments. And I was fascinated by the abilities and capacities of the Human Species in success and in defeat as the story is told by the Nick Webb. Space Ships, Space Stations, Space Cannons, Space Battles -- a plucky band of survivors. I can't wait to see what cosmic surprises we will find in the next book.
Nick Webb is fast becoming one of my favourite go-to authors if I want a nice dose of adventure. Mercury's Bane was definitely jammed with some suspenseful action and a few surprising twists that I didn't see coming. The basic premise of this series is the Telestines (an alien species) have taken control of Earth and Humanity has been largely confined to a series of stations and cities throughout the solar system. Humanity is down but not out and a few have set up a Rebellion. Their 'warships' a series of converted freighters that are out-gunned, out matched and with a few fragments of stolen Telestine tech. The odds are not in their favour but no one, least of all the Telestines, should rule them out and by the end the aliens just might see that Humanity has a sting in it's proverbial tail.
Webb's new series starts off slowly as he develops a picture of the way things are for Humanity in the near future. You definitely get a sense of people just getting by in difficult and not ideal circumstances (I certainly could picture the crammed in masses and cringed at the idea of no large open spaces). Through Pike, the main character, you get a sense of the longing, especially of those who were born on Earth, to come back home and breathe air and smell the earth. Pike, at one point, does get the opportunity to go to earth and you immediately get a sense of how much he longs to be just a farmer - it's a future he longs for, if only the Telestine problem would go away. But first he has to fulfill his mission some how break into a Telestine lab and grab the Dawning, a Telestine device that may bring down their defense grid.
The action at the end was so tense I was clamping on my lip just wondering if the characters were actually going to pull off a win against the Telestines and the ending definitely gave me a creepy feeling up and down my spine. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series )
I have enjoyed previous books by this author but this one was intolerable. The plot line was slow moving, the characters had no depth. As usual aliens who can traverse light years and eradicate mankind on earth cannot figure out how to protect technology with the fatal flaw that will bring them down. There was only a rehash of elements from previous authors but mashed together as to be new. If there was a character I could root for perhaps I could see getting involved in the story but alas no dice.
Continue to read the Legacy Fleet Series but my suggestion is to avoid this one.
Sorry that I had to post this review.
Mid-twentieth Century, Earth conquered by another race, the few Human survivors slowly being eliminated, or used as slaves to dismantle our cities while the alien Telestines soar above in giant cities. The few free remnants of humanity are left trying desperately to survive in the outer Solar System. rebellion is brewing. It will have to be total destruction of the Telestines, since their system has been destroyed. Most of Humanities technology has been destroyed, the rebels are using what little they can get of the Alien tech, and secret workshops setup in the outer system. An unusual Human girl shows up as captive of the Telestines, Lots of combat, Humanity must win or be completely eradicated.
